The South Williamstown Community Association invites you to light the holiday season.
See that stunning play of light and pattern in the images below, or perhaps outside your window right now? That exact arrangement of light and texture is not going to happen again.
When Carol Stegeman takes a photograph, she is aware of that impermanence.
Clouds Over Williamstown at Sunset
You’ve seen Carol’s photographs here on the Destination Williamstown site. Carol is one of the founders of Destination Williamstown, and we’re lucky that she continues to share her scenes of mountains, farms, and forests here.
We reached out to Carol to learn more about her artwork, and she kindly shared some of her story.
Earlier Days
Carol remembers standing beside her father in a dark room learning to develop black and white prints. She also remembers lugging her heavy camera and lens up steep canyon trails to find those beautiful scenes in the American West.
Green River, Utah
When photography went digital, Carol appreciated the convenience and the opportunity to see the image as she took the picture. She soon became comfortable with editing and storing her images on a laptop.
Beautiful Williamstown, MA
When Carol moved to the Berkshires, she turned her eye and her camera to scenes near home: mountain vistas, wooded trails, seasonal gardens, and old farm buildings.
She aims to create visually beautiful photographs and to defamiliarize the familiar.
Visit The Barn at The Williams Inn to see many of Carol’s photographs that explore the rich agricultural history of Williamstown.
There’s an honesty to Carol’s work. She doesn’t care for the unnatural look of over-processed photographs. She only lightly processes her images with Adobe Lightroom to help create results close to what she remembers experiencing.
Some of her favorite subjects include patterns of melting snow, textured hoarfrost, fog, and those times when the clouds and sky space appear to interact as separate elements or characters in the story of that moment.

Carol encourages you to get outdoors and take pictures of moments that really move you. Capture your images in the golden hours before and after sunrise and sunset. Go beyond selfie snapshots and create images of your surroundings that express how a place makes you feel.
Take time to compose your photographs and shoot from multiple angles. Later, edit your images down to your very best and share them with others.
Carol shares her photographs regularly on Instagram and Facebook. She also sells Giclée prints of her images. You can purchase a poster of Moods of Mt. Greylock for only $25.
