Writers & Books

Architects Tessa Kelly and Chris Parkinson have created Mastheads, an architectural project and series of writing residencies that bring emerging writers to five newly designed writing spaces based on five 19th-century writers with Berkshire roots ? Herman Melville, Nathanial Hawthorne, Henry David Thoreau, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow and Oliver Wendell Holmes. Melville described the masthead as both a place of isolation and introspection, characteristics an artist?s studio also shares. Kelly and Parkinson have designed five portable writing studios inspired by these writers and set in places in the Berkshires that have inspired them, including Herman Melville’s Arrowhead, the top of Mount Greylock and Canoe Meadows in Pittsfield.
