FreshGrass is a family-friendly festival in mid-September filled with contemporary bluegrass and folk music on four stages and also in the museum galleries, brick-lined courtyards and grassy fields, produced in partnership by Mass MoCA, the FreshGrass Foundation and No Depression.
Music starts early in the museum courtyards, moves to an urban concert meadow and then continues late at night with outdoor concerts and dances in the Hunter Center on Friday and Saturday nights. The lineup celebrates Grammy winners, international performers and new talent.
Finalists in band, duo, banjo, and fiddle categories perform for a panel of industry professionals on Saturday and Sunday of the festival, with winners announced on Sunday afternoon. Open to all festival-goers, the contest showcases the future of bluegrass and roots music when the bands play original and traditional tunes.
Workshops with bluegrass legends explore banj, guitar, fiddle and more, and music jams invite casual listeners.
Food trucks fill the mill complex with local food, coffee, brews and ice cream. Check freshgrass.com for the latest news about next fall’s lineup.
