A white candle burned down over 12 hours creating a journey through space via its scent at the Williams College Museum of Art (WCMA) last Fall. Layers of the candle, created by artist Katie Paterson, each contained a unique fragrance corresponding to a planet or place in the universe.
A short film gives a taste of this thoughtful exhibit, how WCMA activated the exhibit with music, dance, and poetry, and introduces the artist’s book, A place that exists only in moonlight.
The book contains a series of artworks to exist in the imagination. Comprising over one hundred short texts, each concerns the landscape, the universe, or an expanded sense of earthly and geological time. It’s worth a visit to the artist’s website to read a sample and bring the artworks to life in your own imagination.
