Destination Williamstown names new director

Add to Calendar Destination Williamstown names new director KATE ABBOTT NAMED DIRECTOR OF DESTINATION WILLIAMSTOWN For immediate release October 3, 2017 [Digital image available upon request] Destination Williamstown (destinationwilliamstown.org) today announced the appointment of Kate Abbott to serve as its director. She will lead the content and growth of Williamstown’s digital presence for arts, events, and all things interesting in and around the Northern Berkshires. Berkshire writer Kate Abbott is stepping in as outgoing DW Curator Sandra Thomas moves on to help lead Marty’s Local, a local food distribution company linking farms and food producers with grocery stores, co-ops, chefs, schools, hospitals and other markets. “We are so grateful to Sandra for her work in shaping Destination Williamstown. The site would not be what it is without the entrepreneurial gumption and deep understanding of such a driving force in our community,” said Carol Stegeman, chair of the DW Board of Directors. “Handing the reins to someone as plugged-in and energetic as Kate makes all the sense in the world.” Kate Abbott lives in Williamstown, writing stories and weekly calendars for regional publications and her own media website btwberkshires.com. She has loved the Berkshires since she first saw the sun rise from the slope of Berlin Mountain in her first days as a student at Williams College — and she has covered the region since the summer she graduated and became a cub reporter for the Berkshire Advocate. Kate earned an MFA at the University of New Hampshire and returned to spend almost eight years as editor of Berkshires Week & Shires of Vermont, running a weekly arts and community magazine at the Berkshire Eagle and a weekly column exploring highlights and back roads. “This county has me in awe,” she says. “The ideas, the art, the performances, the people who come to visit — on a quiet fall weekend I can hear a new blend of Indian classical ragas and jazz, or see a new theater work channel a Greek tragedy through the pain of Ferguson, Missouri, or taste aged cheese and cider made just up the hill. We live in a richly creative area, and it’s rare. I look forward to exploring it with locals and visitors together.” Destination Williamstown is a locally designed, locally built, and locally curated website that launched in June 2014 with financial support from community leaders. In 2015, DestinationWilliamstown.org was Designated the official website of the Williamstown Cultural District and was nominated for prestigious Addy Award from the American Advertising Federation. Granted 501c3 non-profit status in 2016, Destination Williamstown has become an important media tool for economic development of the region and a go-to resource for visitors and locals seeking information about the best of the Northern Berkshires.
